Mid Yorkshire Hospitals kitted out with Wybone sackholders...
When The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust embarked on a major development project to build two new hospitals, one in Wakefield the other in Pontefract, the obvious choice for its waste management needs was Wybone.
The family owned company, based in nearby Barnsley, has been offering solutions to the disposal of clinical waste since 1998, when it became NHS Supply Chain listed. Therefore it was ideally placed to consultant and advise on the requirements for two brand new facilities.
Richard Cooper, the managing director of Wybone says: “This was a complete rebuild and so both hospitals needed kitting out with the latest in clinical waste solutions. We pinpointed what was needed and then went about supplying those needs.”
The business is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bins and clinical waste sackholders, with 97% of all products made at its Barnsley base. Where Wybone differs from others is that we offers a bespoke service, where the customer can work alongside the design team to meet unique specifications.
Mid Yorkshire Hospitals needed 2,532 bins and clinical waste sackholders, plus a range of colour coded lids, as it was vital that each unit was colour coded to meet waste stream regulations, to avoid cross contamination. The largest part of the order was for 1,252 mushroom and black sackholders to dispose of domestic waste, but 352 tiger stripe clinical bins were also requested for offensive waste. Size came into play as well with 98, 42 and 28 litres the most popular dimensions.
Both hospitals asked for help to plan the deliveries and the subsequent unpacking, distributing and siting of bins and the removal of waste packaging materials, which could be recycled.
The units have been in situ for three months and are supporting infection prevention and control requirements. An infection prevention and control nurse at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals said: “Our main concern is ensuring good infection prevention and control practice and the bins are suitable for our use.”
The project is now complete and the bins and sackholders are being used on a daily basis to dispose of waste in a safe, clean way.
